Phonics
Phonics teaching takes place every day from Reception to Year 2. The scheme we use is Read Write Inc which introduces sounds in 3 sets. Children are assessed continuously during their daily phonics lessons and then also complete a Read Write Inc assessment each half term. This enables us to accurately support each child at the appropriate level. The groups in which they are taught change regularly according to their needs using additional adults to differentiate the provision more widely.
RWI Set 1 Sounds
- Set 1 speed sounds are written with one letter
- Set 1 sounds written with two letters are called special friends
- Simple words can be made from these sounds by sound blending
- Read words in Red, Green and Purple books
RWI Set 2 Sounds
- Set 2 sounds are special friends that will be read in simple words
- Read a wider range of 'red' words (see below)
- Read Pink, Orange and Yellow books building speed and fluency
RWI Set 3 Sounds
- Set 3 sounds will be read in a range of words
- Chatty friends are introduced they make one sound but are separated by one letter
- Further 'red' words will be learnt (see below)
- Read Blue and Grey books with increasing fluency
During phonics our children are introduced to Fred the Frog. Fred can only say the sounds in the word and needs the children's help to read the word. Fred will say the sounds and the children will work out the word.
To find out more about the books we use take a look at the Reading page on our website.
In their books children will come across Green words which are linked to the sounds they have been learning and are easily decodable. They are split into Speedy Green (Words that children will encounter often) and Story Green (Words that are specific to the story). These words will link to the sounds they have learning.
Children will also come across Red words that are not easily decodable meaning the children cannot use their sounds to read so they must be recognised by sight.
