Art Blocks Project

Year 4 worked with 2 local artists, Josie Brookes and Michelle Allen, to decorate the blocks currently blocking off the end of Heaton Park View. The children explored how Heaton Park makes them feel and how these feelings could be transformed into image and colour to extend the feelings of the park into the wider space. The children made initial designs in school and then each child had the chance to paint the blocks and bring their designs to life, adding a adding a splash of colour to our local community.

The Tempest

Take a look at some of the photos from our stunning performance of The Tempest at The People's Theatre by our talented Year 6 pupils.

Shape Land

Shape Land formed part of our recovery curriculum, it was based around the books Triangle, Square and Circle by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen. The main focus was to really embed the missed learning on shape  and make it memorable for the children across school. The project also included a whole school focus on persuasive writing, a shape based orienteering around school in PE and various sculpture and art opportunities based around shapes. It culminated in Shape Land being created in our gym to celebrate all the learning that had taken place and reconnect the children post COVID through a sharing of work.

Y5 WWI Project

During the spring term, teachers Kathryn Cowen, Katherine Hill, and the Year Five children investigated events on the Western Front 100 years ago. They focused on connections between Newcastle and the awesome German Spring Offensive in March 1918. They discovered that was the month that Britain almost lost the war - and Heaton men were in the thick of the fighting. Find out more by clicking here.

Hotspur Brotherhood

Curriculum dance led to the formation  a boys' dance group - The Brotherhood. They performed at a regional event at Dance City.

Song of the Goblins

One of our most exciting projects to date sees Hotspur children collaborating with professional writers, directors, actors, musicians and designers to create a brand new play for children which will be performed at the Alphabetti Theatre.

The play runs from Tuesday 13th until Saturday 31st December and can be booked here: https://www.alphabettitheatre.co.uk/song-of-the-goblins

STEAM WEEK 2023

We have had an amazing STEAM week, where the children have had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves into their chosen scientific field and research a famous scientist. This week has been a chance to inspire budding scientists and to challenge stereotypes that the children may have about the world of science. Each year group has welcomed a range of visitors who have shared their expertise, led workshops and answered the children’s many thought provoking questions.

STEAM Week 2022

This year's STEAM week big questions was 'How can we make Hotspur colourful all year round?'  The children found out all about the seasons and what type of plants might grow around school at different times of year so they could then take an area of the school grounds and do some planting.

132 Malcolm Street

A couple from 1917 walked out of the Victoria Tunnel in the Ouseburn Valley to discover they had been transported forward one century. Walking around the area they find out that their house at 132 Warwick Street no longer exists - as Hotspur is built on the site. Children researched them using the 1911 census, maps and other sources. Children created a museum exploring decades from when the school was built back to 1910 so that a virtual time machine could be created to return the couple to 1917 with the help of local residents who shared their memories of earlier times.
